Tertiary Education

Teaching of the geosciences should be an integral element of tertiary level science courses. The Australian Geoscience Council therefore supports:
bulletpromotion of geoscience teaching at all universities to at least first year level to foster the recognition of geoscience as a fundamental science, with particular attention given to those seeking to become secondary school science teachers, environmental and biological scientists;
bulletfostering understanding by governments and university administrators that funding for geoscience departments must recognise the unique aspects and costs involved of providing quality geoscience teaching, such as field requirements and specialised equipment needs;
bulletadoption of four year geoscience undergraduate programs in recognition of the Australia's requirements for producing high quality professional geoscience graduates in industry, government and academia;
bulletstrong encouragement of tertiary institutions to make geoscience undergraduate programs open to review by professional societies to ensure that they meet acceptable standards of content and outcomes;
bulletactive promotion of government and industry backing for minerals tertiary education in Australia subject to continuing external review so as to ensure that geoscience students graduate with relevant skills and capabilities, thereby enabling them to understand and deal with the challenges posed by ongoing economic and technological changes;
bulletstructuring of geoscience post-graduate programs to provide for continuing education needs of geoscientists in addressing their technical and professional training and development requirements.
