The fate of Quantum and Australian Science in the ABC

I am writing to thank you for your letter of 6 December 2000, regarding science in the ABC.

We are very pleased to learn that the ABC intends to ‘not merely maintain, but possibly increase its science output next year’. An expansion of science-focused programs by the national broadcaster would be a significant contribution to the culture change central to both the Batterham and ISIG Reports.

If this is indeed the plan, then it is unfortunate it was not spelt out before the axing of Quantum. I am sure there would not have been the current level of concern, if these plans had been articulated up front.

We will await developments.
