AGC Annual Meeting 1998

The following is an Executive Summary of the AGC Annual Meeting held in Adelaide on 16 June 1998:
bulletThe AGC formally responded to a discussion paper released in March 1998 by the Minerals Council of Australia's National Tertiary Education Taskforce. The response, which identified from the geoscience perspective a number important issues raised by the discussion paper, had been well received and has resulted in the Chair of the NTET acknowledging certain shortcomings in the paper.

bulletThe AGC Executive has developed a series of position statements across a number of topics relevant to improving the public perception and understanding of the roles of the geosciences in Australia. The meeting accepted a recommendation by the President that the position statements be subject of further refinements to take account of recent inputs from Member Societies with a view to being submitted for ratification at a General Meeting of the AGC later in the year.

bulletThe President noted in his report that the AGC is an important member of FASTS with the geosciences well represented at both Board and Executive level. FASTS has been very active in recent times in promoting issues in key areas of national science policy. Professor Bob Carter, a Vice-President of FASTS, had been invited to the Annual Meeting as a guest speaker on the role of FASTS.

bulletAnnual Reports of the President, Secretary, Treasurer and the Auditor were all approved and accepted unanimously.

bulletThe Council unanimously agreed to increase the existing assessment on Member Societies by 40 cents to $1.80 per geoscientist per Member Society to apply from the 1999 calendar year.

bulletThe Annual Meeting was attended by 15 people, with voting representatives present from seven of the eight AGC Member Societies. Others present were an Associate Member representative (CSIRO) and a Vice-President of the Vice-President, Federation of Australian Scientific and Technological Societies (FASTS) as a guest speaker on the role of FASTS.
