AGC Position Statements

The Australian Geoscience Council, as the peak national geoscience body, comprises representatives of the eight major Australian geoscience societies, namely the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy; the Australian Geoscience Information Association; the Australian Institute of Geoscientists; the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists; the Association of Exploration Geochemists; the Geological Society of Australia; the Institute of Australian Geographers; and the Petroleum Exploration Society Australia. There are also 18 other associate members and observer bodies affiliated with the AGC.

The AGC's mission is to provide a forum in which representatives of geoscientific bodies can cooperate to encourage the development of the earth sciences in the interests of Australia. Geoscience covers the earth sciences which includes geology, geophysics and geochemistry. This recognises the vital contribution that the application of geoscience makes to our quality of life and economic prosperity.

The objective of the AGC is to represent the broad range of earth science professions, and in particular to provide Australians with a greater appreciation of the economic, environmental and cultural values of the earth sciences.

In support of this objective, the AGC has issued a series of position statements on a range of topics of national significance to the geosciences. The position statements are intended to provide a platform from which the AGC can inform the geoscience community and the general public of the Council's broad approach to specific issues and serve as a framework within which relevant policies, initiatives and actions can be identified, developed and pursued.

The AGC has drawn up position statements for each of the following topics:
bulletPrimary and Secondary Education
bulletTertiary Education
bulletResearch and Innovation
bulletStandards and Ethics
bulletThe Community
bulletGovernment
bulletIndustry

The statements outlined in this document are of a dynamic nature and will therefore be reviewed and updated regularly. The views of geoscientists belonging to member societies are welcomed in this process.
