Frequently Asked Questions

Further information regarding any aspect of the Directory of Australian Geoscientists may be obtained by e-mail - click here to submit your question.  Frequently asked questions will be presented on this page for the benefit of other contributors to the directory.

Is access to the directory restricted to Australian Institute of Geoscientists menbers? No.  Information authorised for publication by individual contributors will be available to anyone who accesses this site.   Information for contributors claiming membership of a particular professional association will be available to the body in question.

Contributions to the site by ALL Australian geoscientists are actively encouraged!  The more geoscientists who contribute information, and keep it up to date, the better the standard of information and service provided by the directory.

Can I contribute information to be used for statistical purposes without having an entry in the directory? Yes.  Contributors have the option of specifying that no information regarding them be published (although the form should be completed so that we can ensure and verify the accuracy and authenticity of any information submitted).
Will Directory information be available to commercial organisations? No!  Specific information will ba available through the on-line query facility and to professional bodies representing professional geoscientists.  Only statistical summaries of information relating to the training, employment and professional standing of geoscientists will be published.
I'm a self employed contractor.  At the moment I'm not getting sufficient work to be considered fully employed.  How should I answer the employment questions for the directory? Self employed contractors and consultants who are not substantially fully employed should indicate that they have been unemployed in either the previous 12 months or five years as appropriate, and use the time unemployed field to indicate the proportion of employment.

All data entered in this part of the form is used for statistical purposes only.  The aim of these questions is to be able to present a statistical "snapshot" of how effectively the resource of trained geoscientists in Australia is being used.

How secure is information submitted to the directory? Only information specifically authorised for publication by contributors is stored on-line.

The directory search facility only permits searches using specific criteria.  Directory of Australian Geoscientists information will not be knowingly or intentionally provided to any organisation seeking to use this data for commercial purposes.

How do I update my information? You can update information using the printed directory form or on-line.

If using the printed form, simply fill in the areas that need to be updated, sign and date the form, and post it to us.

To update your information on-line, fill in the required fields on the form (indicated by *), enter your password and update the required fields.

I originally provided information using the printed form because I didn't have Internet access but I now want to maintain my information using the on-line form.  Is this possible? Yes.  Complete the on-line form.  You will be contacted to verify the authenticity of changes to the information provided previously.   Subsequent updates will be authenticated using your password.
If I opt to have contact details included in the directory exactly what gets published? Your address for correspondence, work telephone, fax, mobile telephone number and e-mail address.  Directory options enable addresses and telephone numbers to be suppressed if required.
I'm a self employed geoscientist.  How can I indicate that my available time is not fully utilised in the employment statistics? Self-employed geoscientists should indicate the proportion of their available work time not currently utilised in terms of months for the period requested e.g.: 50% of available time not utilised in the past 12 months equates with 6 months unemployment.

Constructive suggestions and comments are always welcome
